We have been living in Koh Samui for around three months and so every now and then we treat ourselves to a little weekend break at a hotel on the island. It allows us to explore and relax without having to move our huge suitcases each time.

In August we booked an overnight stay at Hacienda in Fisherman’s Village, we did try and extend our stay as we loved it so much, but sadly they were fully booked.

Read on to find out why we wanted to stay just a little bit longer and why you should consider Hacienda for your next stay in Koh Samui.

LOCATION

The Hacienda is a beachside boutique hotel in the heart of Fisherman’s Village, located in the northwest of Koh Samui.

Fisherman’s Village is the perfect place to grab a bite to eat, shop until you drop, relax at a spa, or even enjoy a few cocktails and a fire show. They also have a market which currently runs three times a week on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Directly opposite the hotel is a French/Vietnamese restaurant called Red Moon, the owner is from Nice, France and he really knows his flavours, we can highly recommend the beef steak with truffle mash and the seared tuna steak with fondant potatoes.

And if you are looking for something a little more cultural, you can visit Big Buddha and other colourful temples such as Wat Plai Laem which are just a short 10-minute drive away. Or maybe you are looking for some beautiful beach clubs and exciting nightlife, then Chaweng is less than 15-minutes away.

You can book taxis directly with reception or you can take a short 5-minute stroll to the entrance of Fisherman’s Village where you can pick up a taxi or a songthaew (public bus – just flag them down, let them know where you’d like to go and then hop in the back) to take you anywhere on the island. Just make sure to negotiate a fair price before jumping in. The bus & taxi drivers are known for offering ‘the tourist’ price. For short journeys of around 10 minutes, you should only be paying a maximum of 300฿ (£7.10).

ROOM

They offer four different room styles: Deluxe Sea View, Deluxe Village View, Family Suite & Beach Suite. We were lucky enough to bag ourselves one of the Beach Suites – Room number 1.

OUTSIDE SPACE: We had a large patio with two sunloungers, a separate area with a table & chairs and even a comfy bench to sit and admire the ocean.

INSIDE SPACE: The room was bright, airy and spacious with some very cool artwork on the walls. Lots of turquoise, blues and whites, the perfect decor for a beachside room. There is plenty of hanging space as well as a large chest of drawers, a mini fridge, smart TV and a safe for your valuables. The bathroom has a great design, with plenty of room, a unique stone basin and privacy glass allowing you to shower whilst looking out to sea.

We spent a wonderful evening on the terrace, watching the sun go down and enjoying our mini-fridge beers.

ROOFTOP POOL

Grab some pool towels from reception and head on up to the rooftop pool. It’s only a small space but there are four sun loungers available for you to use and a couple of umbrellas for a bit of shade. You won’t be swimming any lengths here but it’s the perfect spot to relax with a cold drink, soak up some rays and soak in the views.

From here, you can see for miles, directly in front is the island of Koh Phangan and to the right, you might be able to see the sun shining off of the golden Big Buddha statue, plus you be able to spot plenty of speedboats, fishing boats, catamarans & maybe a super yacht or two, plus all of the adventurous jetskiers, paddleboarders and parasailers.

BEACH

Bophut beach has beautiful white sand and crystal clear waters, but it’s not our favourite beach and you won’t see too many people swimming here, the reason is that once you’re in the water the sand turns to an almost mud or clay-like consistency which doesn’t feel great on your feet, you sort of feel a bit like you’re sinking. There certainly are much nicer beaches in Koh Samui to visit for a day of sunbathing and swimming.

But having said that, it’s a great beach for walking and many of the bars & restaurants in Fisherman’s Village have outside tables, right on the beach, so it’s the perfect excuse to pop by for something cold and fizzy whilst keeping your toes in the sand.

BREAKFAST

The hotel does offer a limited breakfast selection and as we only stayed for one night we decided to pay the small extra fee to have breakfast delivered to our room.

Carl chose the American breakfast, with scrambled eggs, bacon, french baguette & a croissant and for me, I went for the continental which includes a delicious pain au chocolate, french baguette with butter & jam plus two frothy coffees and two passionfruit juices.

The price for the breakfast is super reasonable for the area, but if you’re staying for a few nights I would also suggest heading into the village as there are so many fantastic cafes offering a wide selection of both European and Thai breakfasts to set you up for the day.

SUMMARY

We absolutely loved our stay at Hacienda, the location is incredible, with everything you need just a short stroll away, the rooms and the rooftop offer incredible views and the staff here are truly wonderful and will do all they can to make your stay a memorable one.
