Self-guided island tour

If you have your own transport and want to explore at your own pace, then a self-guided island tour is perfect for you! Just plug these locations into your Google map (don’t forget to download your map for offline use) to find all the must-see spots and hidden gems Koh Samui has to offer. Here are some highlights you won’t want to miss:

• Big Buddha (Wat Phra Yai) •

Start your adventure with a visit to the iconic Big Buddha Temple. This 12-metre-high golden Buddha statue sits majestically on a small island connected to Koh Samui by a short causeway. Since its construction in 1972, it has become a major landmark and tourist attraction. Feel the peaceful vibes as you marvel at this grand figure and take in the serene surroundings.

• WAT PLAI LAEM •

Next up, head over to Wat Plai Laem, a beautiful modern Buddhist temple that blends Chinese and Thai traditions. The main statue here is Guanyin with eighteen arms, a form of the bodhisattva of compassion and mercy. • GRANDFATHER & GRANDMOTHER ROCKS (HIN TA AND HIN YAI) •

These quirky granite rock formations resemble male and female genitalia and are one of Koh Samui’s most popular attractions. Located near Lamai Beach, these rocks come with their own local legends and are a must-see for their unique shapes and the humorous stories they inspire.

• OVERLAP STONE •

Overlooking Lamai Beach, the Overlap Stone offers one of the best viewpoints on the island. This natural wonder is a 20-30ft rounded stone resting on a natural platform, providing an unbelievable and unique photo opportunity.

• GUAN YU SHRINE •

Visit the Guan Yu Shrine, home to the biggest bronze statue of Guan Yu in Thailand, standing at 16 meters high. This shrine is a celebration of Chinese heritage and a landmark for sightseeing in Koh Samui.

• WAT KHUNARAM •

Stop by Wat Khunaram to see the shrine of “the Mummy Monk,” Luang Pho Daeng, who died in 1973 and he directed his mummified body be put on display, to serve as a poignant reminder of the transience of human existence.

• SECRET BUDDHA GARDEN •

Also known as Tarnim Magic Garden, this private sculpture park atop Pom Mountain is a tranquil oasis filled with beautiful statues and lush greenery. It’s a peaceful and picturesque spot worth the visit.

• NA MUEANG WATERFALLS •

Finish your tour with a visit to the Na Mueang Waterfalls. Na Mueang Waterfall 1 is an 18m high cascade with a lovely pool at its base, perfect for a quick dip. Na Mueang Waterfall 2, with its impressive 80m height, is accessible by a jungle trek and offers a breathtaking view and a pool suitable for swimming.

• Jungle Club •

For a very special lunch, head to The Jungle Club, where you’ll be greeted by breathtaking panoramic views over the Gulf of Siam. Nestled on a coconut plantation overlooking the bay of Chaweng, this hidden gem was lovingly created by a French-Thai family who seamlessly blended traditional materials with the natural landscape.

At The Jungle Club Restaurant, you can indulge in a delightful mix of Thai, French, Italian, and Mediterranean dishes curated by “Chef Wally”. Relax on colorful bean bags on the open wooden deck or choose a more traditional spot under the straw-thatched dining room.

Important Tips: The road leading up to The Jungle Club is very steep—only experienced motorcyclists should attempt it. For safety, it’s best to leave your scooter at the base by The Jungle Club bus stop and call for their jungle buggy to take you up. Watch a fire show on the beach

Thailand’s famous fire shows are a must during your visit and Koh Samui has plenty of locations to choose from, so no matter where you’re staying you’re sure to find one in your area. One of the most famous fire show’s on the island is located in Fisherman’s Village at Coco Tams, but there are plenty of other beach bars and clubs where you can catch a show.

Watching a fire show is free but you do need to purchase a drink and tips after the show are always encouraged in exchange for a great photo op. Here are our five favourite locations to catch a fire show on the beach in Koh Samui.

Fisherman’s Village

• Coco Tams •

Coco Tam’s is a very popular and Instagrammable location in Fisherman’s Village, they have two fire shows every evening at 19.15 and 21.00. It can get very busy here, so we’d advise you to head there at least 30 minutes before the show to claim your beach beanbag and grab a drink. Side note, the prices are a little steep and the service isn’t always 10/10 but the fire show is easily one of the best on the island. Definitely worth a visit in our opinion.

Chaweng

• Elephant Beach Club •

Elephant Beach Club is fantastic during the day if you just want to lounge by the pool or enjoy the beach here, but at night is when this place really comes to life. They have a beach fire show every evening from 20.00. Keep an eye on their Instagram for upcoming events as over the weekends they throw some pretty epic parties.

• LOST BEACH BAR •

This cute and rustic beach bar puts on a fire show every evening at 19.00, but make sure to head down early as they have some great happy hour deals from 16.00 until 19.00. The owner here is also a passionate DJ, so expect some great tunes to accompany the show.

• ArkBar BEACH RESORT •

ARKBar Beach Club is a very famous spot in Chaweng that hosts pool and beach parties almost every night. It’s a popular spot with a younger/backpacker crowd but the fire show is pretty impressive and is on every night from 20.00. Free to attend, but you’ll just need to grab yourself a drink.

Lamai

• The Door •

The Door is an open air restaurant and beach club in the heart of Lamai. The food menu here is impressive and well worth a visit for dinner. We’d recommend trying to head there on a Saturday as they have a brilliant violinist called Valentin Voroshilov playing from 16.00 until 19.00. The fire show is nightly from 20.30.

Visit Fisherman’s Village night market

One of the most popular night markets on the island is the Fisherman’s Village right market which runs four days a week on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays from 4pm until late. It’s a must-do whilst in Samui in my opinion. Try some delicious street food, we love the grilled sweetcorn, fresh sugar cane juice, and banana rotis but there’s something here for everyone and if you’re brave enough they’ve also got deep-fried critters. Most of the food here is very reasonably priced which means you can sample lots of local delicacies during your visit.

You can also sit and enjoy some music and a cocktail or two, just be reminded that the alcohol they use for the cocktails is not the best quality so I’d recommend going easy on those unless you’ve got a quiet day by the pool planned for the following day, nothing worse than a cheap cocktail hangover.

It’s also a great opportunity to pick up some souvenirs, you’ll find lots of clothing, trinkets, cooking utensils and ingredients, local skincare products, bags, homewares and much more.

Watch some live music

Fisherman’s Village

• Karma SUTRA •

Located opposite the boat in Fisherman’s Village, just a short stroll from the entrance you’ll find Karma Sutra, a cute and rustic bar. They have live music and DJs four nights a week, with everything from rock classics to funk and soul. It’s a great night out and the drinks are reasonably priced for the area too!

• Happy Elephant Square •

In the middle of the village, you’ll notice a large restaurant called The Happy Elephant, directly across from this is a large square with food vendors and massage parlours, this is Happy Elephant Square. Every evening from 7pm they have a live band and it’s totally free to enjoy. You can buy street food from the vendors and enjoy a nice cold beer for just ฿100 (£2.25). Whilst you’re here I’d recommend trying a Frozee, a frozen wine cocktail served in a rose gold goblet, perfect for a hot Samui evening.

• Secret Garden •

Secret Garden is actually in Bangrak, just 5 minutes or so from Fisherman’s Village and is well known for lively music nights and some great foodie events which they host throughout the year. They have music evenings three times a week on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays. Check out their Facebook page for more information.

Chaweng

Chaweng comes to life at night and there are many places with live music but these two spots are our personal faves.

• Jimmy Woos •

If you enjoy rock music then this is the place for you. They have music every night of the week and a dancefloor for those of you who want a bit of a boogie.

• The Duke pub •

The Duke is a very large pub in Chaweng, you can’t miss it as it has a mock Tudor frontage. They have live music every evening from 8:30 pm. It’s also a good spot to watch the footie and if you’re missing a taste of home they’ve got all the classics, English fry-up, sausage and mash and even roasts on Sundays. Another good option if you’re in Chaweng.

Spend the day at a beach club

There are some fantastic beach clubs in Koh Samui and many will have events on throughout the week. Almost all of them have free entry but will have a minimum spend to use the loungers. Nearly all of them have complimentary towels and showers to use.

Obviously, if you’re spending the day enjoying cocktails and sitting down for lunch the prices can be steep, but you can easily spend the day at a beach club on a budget, switch cocktails for soft drinks or local beers and rather than sitting down for an expensive lunch, why not try some poolside snacks and save room and budget for dinner at a local Thai restaurant.
