The 10 best things to do in Koh Samui, Thailand

Koh Samui is an island paradise and we absolutely love it here, we’ve actually spent seven out of the last 12 months living on the island so we’ve done a lot of exploring during that time and have picked out some of our favourite activities to help you plan out your ultimate Koh Samui adventure.

BOAT TRIPS FROM KOH SAMUI

1. Hop aboard the Red Dragon Yacht and visit Ang Thong the National Marine Park

Duration: 8h 30m

Experience the ultimate luxury sailing adventure in Koh Samui aboard the Red Dragon Classic Thai Yacht. This 78ft teak wood yacht offers a unique blend of authentic Thai hospitality and European boating standards.

The trip to Ang Thong Marine Park is a full-day excursion where you’ll be treated to a light breakfast, fresh fruit, and a buffet lunch. They also have a PADI-certified snorkelling guide who will ensure you have a memorable underwater adventure. Your journey includes everything you need for a comfortable and enjoyable experience with Wi-Fi, insurance, transportation, meals, snorkelling equipment, life vests, towels, and restroom facilities onboard.

During the tour, you will stop at Ko Mae Ko, where you’ll discover the famous Blue Lagoon that inspired Alex Garland’s book and movie, “The Beach.” This stunning location, also known as the “Emerald Lake” is considered the highlight of the marine park. As the last boat allowed to visit Ko Mae Ko, you won’t encounter other organised tours, ensuring a more exclusive experience.

On the return journey to Koh Samui, you can relax on deck, take a dip in the jacuzzi, treat yourself to refreshing drinks and desserts, or just enjoy the scenic cruise and breathtaking sunset views.

Please note that the marine park admission fee (฿300 for adults and ฿150 for children), sea kayaking rental fee (฿250 per person), and corkage fee (฿300 per person) for bringing your own drinks are not included.

2. Visit Coral & Pig Island (Koh Madsum) by Longtail Boat

£40 per person (€46/$51/AU$76)

Try this island-hopping adventure where you are able to discover beautiful coral reefs whilst swimming with colourful marine life and meet the friendly pigs of Pig Island Koh Madsum.

Your day will start early with pick-up from your accommodation where you’ll be taken to Thong Krut Pier in the south of the island. From here you’ll board a boat and make your way to Koh Madsum. After this, you will travel to Koh Tean where you will have time to swim, relax, snorkel, kayak or just explore the area before enjoying a traditional Thai lunch.

After a full afternoon, you will make your way back to Thong Krut and be transferred back to your accomodation.

3. Join Mr Tu for a day of Sea Fishing

Mr Tu’s fishing day trip takes you off the tropical coast of Koh Samui and into the prime fishing territory of the Gulf of Thailand. Your vessel with a friendly and experienced crew will have all the equipment you will need to fish for local species, from rods and lines down to baits and lures.

You will be collected from your accommodation and taken to Phu Yai Non Pier where you’ll meet the boat crew and complete some forms. Then you’ll head out to the first fishing spot where your guide will give you practical tips about line fishing to catch local fish such as barracuda, trevally and snapper.

After a morning of fishing, a hearty buffet lunch of Thai soup, grilled fish, rice and fresh tropical fruits will be provided allowing you to feast whilst admiring the spectacular view of the surrounding islands. If the weather permits the crew may stop for a brief swim/snorkel before returning to the pier and taking you back to your hotel.

Please note: It is not guaranteed that you can catch fish and any fish you do catch will be used as part of the lunch menu. This tour is not recommended for pregnant women, infants under 6 years, people over 65 years or people with back or neck problems. During check-in you will need to provide your name and passport number for the insurance forms so please remember your passport or bring a photocopy of the passport ID page on the day of the trip.


AFTERNOON ADVENTURES IN KOH SAMUI

4. Visit an ethical Elephant Sanctuary

Duration: 4 HOURS

Meet rescued Thai and African elephants at Samui Elephant Sanctuary in Bophut. Here you will spend the day learning all about these beautiful and gentle giants, help to prepare their favourite foods, feed them some of their favourite fruits and watch them play in the mud and bathe in the ponds by themselves on a half-day tour with hotel transfers and a buffet lunch included.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE TRIP:
  • Helping to prepare the elephant’s favourite rice balls and ‘elephant sushi’

5. Take part in a farm-to-table Thai cooking class

Duration: 4 hours

Spend a day with Chef Lat at Island Organics private jungle location and learn the secrets of a sustainable lifestyle. Explore the organic gardens where more than 70 types of fruit, vegetables and herbs are grown and harvest your own produce to contribute to the cooking experience.

During the class, you will learn four classic Thai recipes as well as some fundamental Thai cooking skills such as making curry pastes from scratch, how coconut cream is made, and how to prepare herbal drinks. Then sit down, relax and enjoy all of the delicious Thai food you have helped to prepare during your culinary adventure.

We have previously been on a similar experience in Krabi and it’s the perfect activity for anyone who wants to learn more about Thai food and cooking and have the knowledge of preparing these incredibly fragrant dishes at home.

6. Fly through the jungle at Tree Bridge Cafe & Zipline
